So you want to be featured in VOGUE?

Ultimately, being featured in Vogue or any other Publication can be a way for a bride to celebrate her wedding and the planning that went into it. It can also be a way to inspire other brides and showcase the talents of the vendors who worked on the wedding.

 

So you want to be featured in a publication? It’s 2023 and you're planning your wedding and you want your wedding to be featured. I go through this with so many of my clients and I have to have the “talk”.
Here is a list of what they look for to be considered:

  • High-profile couple or celebrities: Weddings of celebrities or high-profile individuals are more likely to be selected for publication. Do you have a large following? Are you an influencer?

  • Unique and spectacular venues or locations: Weddings that take place in unique and spectacular venues or locations are more likely to catch the eye of a magazine editor. No I am not talking about your local hotel resort in the middle of suburban NJ. Im talking about in the mountains, Italy, exotic locations, hard to get too. I once photographed a wedding under the Christ The Redeemer in Brazil.

  • Designer clothing and accessories: Weddings that feature designer clothing and accessories are more likely to be selected for publication. No not your average SabyaSachi legnha, that’s overdone, i’m talking dresses no one has seen before, colors that no one has worn before.

  • Unique or creative themes and styling: Weddings with unique and creative themes and styling are more likely to be selected for publication. Flowers that flow in abundance, Mandaps that haven’t been made in this shape before.

  • Exceptional photography: The quality of the photography is key, it should be visually stunning and should tell the story of the wedding in a meaningful way. Wedding Photography and Editorial Photography are two different things. I care about the legacy and moments that evoke emotion like the way your mother laughed and cried at the same time, the way she held your hand as she was giving you away, not the way your dress flowed in the wind when you posed like a statue. Think about the way commercial shoots are done, Lighting, Posing, Crew, Stylist, Location, Permits. When you want it to look like something out of a magazine, then you need time, time to get all these things right, not the 5mins you have left in your already jam packed timeline. Sometimes I recommend to shoot your portraits in your wedding outfits a day or two before the wedding.

  • Popularity of the wedding planner or designer, or the brand they are working with.

  • Timing: Magazine editors often plan their content well in advance, so if a wedding takes place after the editorial calendar is set, it may not be considered for that issue.

  • Relationships: Having a good relationship with the magazine's editorial staff can help increase the chances of being selected for publication.

It's important to keep in mind that even if a wedding meets all of these criteria, it still may not be selected for publication. The competition is high and many factors are taken into consideration when deciding which weddings to feature. However, having a beautiful and unique wedding, with stunning photography, is certainly a step in the right direction.

Even though some of my weddings have been featured on various platforms, I would always recommend my clients to think about what is more important to them. Is it the photo op the Fashion Editorial Spread of your wedding? or simply I am getting married and that should be my focus?

  • Emotional significance: The union between the couple is emotionally significant and should be the main focus of the day. By focusing on this, the couple can fully immerse themselves in the moment and make the most out of their special day.

  • Long-term investment: A wedding is a long-term investment in the couple's relationship. By focusing on the union, the couple can ensure that they start their marriage off on the right foot.

  • Building memories: Weddings are a once-in-a-lifetime event, and focusing on the union can help create meaningful memories that will last a lifetime.

  • Prioritizing what matters: Instead of getting caught up in the pretentious things, focusing on the union allows the couple to prioritize what truly matters on their wedding day.

  • Creating a more authentic experience: By focusing on the union, the couple can create a more authentic and meaningful experience for themselves and their guests.

  • Cost effective :By focusing on the union rather than pretentious things, couples can also save money, which could be put into better use later on.

  • A true reflection of your love: This will be the best way to truly show and reflect the love that brought you both together.

  • It's not to say that the details and aesthetics don't matter, but focusing on the union is what truly makes a wedding meaningful, special and an event of a lifetime. Rather than getting bogged down by superficial things, focus on what truly matters: the love and commitment between the couple.
